D, Executive Director, Zurich

D, found himself in a challenging situation during a performance review

D encountered a significant discrepancy: A team member had rated themselves significantly higher than D’s assessment in areas requiring marked improvement. D sought my mediation expertise to bridge this gap and facilitate a constructive dialogue.

The primary aim unfolded on two fronts: first, to unravel and understand the disparity between the two sets of ratings, and second, to improve communication within the team. Through the mediation process, we prioritized active listening, a key step in appreciating the perspectives and expectations of both parties. Utilizing refined negotiation skills, we aimed to delicately balance honest feedback with positive reinforcement.

Our discussions revealed underlying challenges faced by the team member, including financial difficulties and home health concerns, previously unknown to D. These personal burdens had led the team member to overextend themselves across projects, impacting their performance and the team’s reliance on them. The situation was further complicated because the team hesitated to voice their concerns, fearing he might lose his job.

The Outcome and the tools we used:

  • Bridging the Perception Gap: We initiated a candid conversation about the ratings discrepancy, employing empathy to ensure a non-confrontational environment. This helped both D and the team member to align their perspectives on performance standards and expectations.
  • Enhancing Team Communication: We introduced structured communication techniques, encouraging the team member to articulate their challenges and enabling the team to offer constructive feedback. This fostered a culture of open, supportive dialogue.
  • Strategic Action Plan: Together, we developed a tailored action plan that included realistic goal setting, considering the team member’s current personal commitments. We also established a temporary support mechanism within the team to help manage workload more effectively.
  • Ongoing Support and Check-Ins: A follow-up schedule was established to monitor progress, adjust strategies as needed, and maintain open lines of communication. This continuous engagement ensured that adjustments could be made in real time, aligning with the team member’s evolving capacity and the team’s needs.

As a result, the team members began to meet their adjusted targets with greater consistency, and the team learned to communicate their needs and concerns more effectively.

The outcome was a testament to the importance of empathy, clear communication, and collaborative problem-solving in overcoming workplace challenges and enhancing team cohesion.

J, 38, Dating 

J, found himself at a crossroads common to many in his age group. Despite a successful career and a close circle of friends, the realm of dating seemed like uncharted territory. Online dating, while a seemingly endless pool of opportunities, felt impersonal and daunting to J. He longed for genuine connections, the kind that could lead to a future he had always envisioned: settling down and starting a family.

However, his dating experience was challenging. For example, making a lasting first impression on a blind date. At dates, he often found himself anxious, which made it hard for him to showcase his true personality, or the subtle non verbal signs his dates were sending. The ambiguity left him second-guessing every gesture, unsure if he should continue the topic or steer the conversation elsewhere.

J had a wealth of experiences and interests to share, he struggled to find the spontaneity that sparks lively, engaging conversations.

We started by anchoring his values—identifying what truly mattered for his happiness and wellbeing. We introduced him to simple yet effective negotiation techniques, enabling him to interpret non-verbal signals accurately and communicate confidently. This newfound skill empowered J to keep conversations flowing, even when pauses loomed.

Participation in our curated events offered J a platform to hone these skills in real-time, engaging with women in an environment where he felt both relaxed and invigorated. This practice was transformative, shedding the biases of past dating experiences and bolstering his confidence.

It was in this relaxed, engaging setting that he met A who shared his sense of adventure and outlook on life and whose interests aligned seamlessly with his.  

E, Graphic Designer, Zurich  

E, a dedicated graphic designer working remotely for a digital marketing company, faced the common challenge of remote work: making her contributions visible to her boss, especially when discussing compensation. 

Despite her significant input and the extra hours devoted to projects, the digital work environment had introduced barriers to effective communication, making it difficult for E to approach the subject of a salary increase.

Understanding the nuances of her situation, we focused on a strategic approach to bridge the gap. I introduced E to a simple yet powerful negotiation tool called ZOPA:

Zone Of Possible Agreement. This method involves outlining a range of acceptable outcomes for the negotiation, from the ideal scenario to the minimum acceptable agreement. By identifying these goals, E could focus her negotiation strategy on achieving a realistic and satisfying outcome.

To prepare for her virtual meeting with her boss, E documented her key achievements and the added value she brought to the team. She highlighted her role’s complexity and her innovative solutions, presenting them alongside market standards for her position. Regular update meetings were planned to maintain visibility of her contributions, leveraging performance metrics as tangible evidence of her impact.

This preparation paid off. A few weeks later, E’s boss recognized the need for a structured performance review schedule, ensuring her work’s visibility and value.

While the salary discussion was ongoing, E remained optimistic. Her use of ZOPA and a confident and clear presentation of her accomplishments had initiated a productive dialogue, setting the stage for future negotiations.

S, 45, Betrayal 

S discovered her partner’s affair, a challenging moment that brought their communication down to minimal exchanges about their children or emotionally charged discussions.

S wanted to know whether repairing their relationship was possible or advisable for them and their kids.

I started working with S, delved into the relationship’s history, identifying which core values were being met and which were neglected. 

I then started working with her husband, and discovered what I often do in these circumstances, that communicating the need to change and improve was a challenge, the uncertainty of the outcome, the fear of rocking the boat and making things worse was as in many of the relationships I work with the main factor. 

The breakthrough often comes in a safe space, facilitated by a neutral third party. Here, expressing one’s true desires and concerns becomes more manageable.

Introducing them to simple yet profound neuroscience-based tools, we focused on active listening, self-control, emotional resilience, and clear, respectful communication. This approach laid all cards on the table, fostering a space where both could express themselves openly, clearly, respectfully, and confidently.

Ultimately, while S and her partner decided on separate paths, the skills they developed transformed their co-parenting into a harmonious relationship. Living closely but apart, they both found happiness anew, underpinned by the communication skills that now guide their interactions
